Mary was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Grady and Margaret Franklin.Mary graduated from Wicomico High School in Salisbury, Md.She was a 20 year employee of Walmart and a 19 year member of Post 19 Auxiliary, Laurel American Legion.Upon graduation in 1957, a football scholarship to UNC with Coach Jim Tatum, as well as running track, taught Bobby the difference between high school and university sports. Graduation from Atlantic Christian College in 1962 with a BS degree in history and physical education led to head football coach/teaching positions at West Stanley High School, Cherryville High School and North Hampton High School. His charisma, unconventional approach, steadfast commitment and love of simply having fun endeared him to students, staff and community members.Upon his father’s death, he again realized academics as top priority.
